About Nomadic Instruments

Nomadic Instruments is a living archive of handcrafted, one-of-a-kind instruments designed to tell a story, one artist at a time. Conceived by Patryk Larney of Hope Tree Entertainment, the project was born from the belief that music is meant to travel, inspire, and evolve. This initiative connects musicians across generations, genres, and geographies through the shared use of a single instrument.

Each Nomadic Instrument carries a unique origin, a distinct sound, and a soul shaped by every hand it passes through. The project is equal parts art, experiment, and communal ritual, a slow burning fire of creativity passed along the artist to artist lineage.

This is not a contest. Not a stunt. It is a story.

At its core, Nomadic Instruments is about legacy, creating a chain of truth tellers bound not by fame, but by heart. As each instrument travels, it picks up songs, scars, and spirit, leaving a breadcrumb trail of performances, ideas, and inspiration.

PROJECT 1 : THE TORCH

Carry the Flame. Tell Your Truth. Pass It On.

THE TORCH
The Torch is the debut project from Nomadic Instruments, built around a completely custom acoustic guitar handcrafted by luthier Matt Polhemus. Known for his beautiful and durable instruments created for some of today’s most notable artists (The Young Fables, Stephen Wilson Jr, Todd Snider, Aaron LaCombe, Ben Davis Jr, Chicago Farmer, Chris Watts, Katie Toupin, Myron Elkins, and Ben de La Cour among others).

Here is how it works: The Young Fables will launch the project by recording an original performance using The Torch. Their video will be uploaded to a dedicated YouTube channel that serves as the official archive. Then, they will pass the guitar to an artist of their choosing who will have two weeks to record a performance, upload their own video, and pass The Torch on to the next artist in the chain.

Each new artist receives a secret username and password to access the channel, ensuring that uploads are made only by those chosen to carry the flame.

This creates an evolving digital campfire, an unfolding lineage of songs, performances, and truths shared by some of the most passionate voices in music today.

Construction of THE TORCH is already underway by luthier Matt Polhemus.

The Torch is

  • A collaborative art project

  • A social experiment in trust and timing

  • A handmade heirloom traveling across a living network of artists

  • A new form of storytelling and digital legacy

If successful, The Torch will be the first of many projects under the Nomadic Instruments banner. Future instruments may include mandolins, ukuleles, and more, each with its own journey, its own voice, and its own chain of storytellers.

Stay tuned. The next song is already on its way.

A LITTLE MORE ABOUT: THE TORCH

The Making of The Torch

The Torch is more than a guitar. It is a work of art, a gesture of generosity, and the spark that ignited Nomadic Instruments.

This custom acoustic was handcrafted by renowned luthier Matt Polhemus, whose instruments are celebrated for their beauty, durability, and distinct tone. At the time the project was introduced, Polhemus was already deep into building a one of a kind guitar for a client named Jon Durrell, a personal gift of thanks for work John had done on his behalf.

When Patryk Larney of Hope Tree Entertainment reached out to share the vision for Nomadic Instruments and its first project, something shifted. Polhemus was immediately inspired by the idea of an artist to artist storytelling guitar, but his schedule was full and the timeline uncertain. Then came an unexpected turn.

When Polhemus shared the vision of The Torch with Durrell, the client was deeply moved. So much so that he offered to donate his guitar, still in progress, to become the very first Nomadic Instrument. His selfless act brought the project to life much sooner than expected.

The Torch is Polhemus’ signature orchestra model, crafted with an exceptionally rare and boutique wood combination. The top is Sitka Spruce, prized for its rich responsiveness and tonal complexity. The back and sides are built from Black Limba, an exotic and visually stunning tonewood known for its clarity and warmth. The neck is carved from solid mahogany, providing both stability and a smooth, resonant character.

“This is a special material set,” Polhemus says. “It is not often you get to work with woods like this in one build. The tone this guitar will produce is unlike anything you have heard. We are creating something remarkable here.”

From its origin in generosity to its role as a vessel of truth and connection, The Torch is already living up to its name, carrying a fire that is only just beginning to spread.
